Envirothon

Background:

Envirothon is organized by the Ontario Forestry Association and offered to secondary school students each year in communities throughout Ontario. Stewardship Councils under the auspices of the Ministry of Natural Resources take the lead in bringing community partners together to run Regional Envirothons. The winning team from each regional event goes on to compete in the Provincial Competition.

Purpose of Notice:

Each year the Hamilton-Wentworth Regional Envirothon has been organized by a Steering Committee made of representatives from the schools, the community, the Conservation Authority and the Ministry of Natural Resources. The purpose of this notice is to outline early information about the 2011 Hamilton-Wentworth Regional Envirothon.

By now schools should have received an information package from the Ontario Forestry Association containing details and registration information for 2011. The packages are most likely found with the Head of Science, Head of Geography or the teacher who fielded a team in 2010. Registration and information can be found and downloaded from the Envirothon website. www.ontarioenvirothon.on.ca

The Regional Coordinator can also be contacted for information or questions.

Important Dates

Saturday March 26, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. – location to be announced

This workshop will focus on the Special Topic for 2011 - Salt and Fresh Water Estuaries

Salt water estuaries are semi-enclosed areas where sea water and freshwater mix. Freshwater estuaries are regions where lake and river waters mix. Estuaries are among the most productive ecosystems on earth and have been considered by some to be second only to the rainforests in productivity. They also are important as a first line of defence against the destructive power of the oceans caused by hurricanes, tropical storms, strong gales, high tides, and other natural disturbances. These estuarine marshlands still provide valuable ecosystem functions such as habitat for wildlife, a place for hundreds of marine organisms to spawn, filter sediments and pollutants, and acting as a buffer between land and ocean by absorbing floodwaters and dissipating storm surges.

The workshop will also include information about preparing for the Envirothon Competition. More information will be sent out closer to the workshop.
