Environmental, Outdoor Education Programs

2011 – 2012 School Year - Outdoor Environmental Education Field Trip Opportunities

Dear Elementary & Secondary School Teachers:

Hamilton Wentworth District School Board and the Hamilton Conservation Authority are once again, working together to provide outdoor environmental education program opportunities for elementary and secondary students. The focus of these programs is to provide students with hands-on, outdoor education experiences that meet student learning expectations as found in the Ministry of Education guidelines.

Who May Book?

• Teachers of Elementary or Secondary classes within HWDSB, Grades 2 - 12
• A maximum of two classes, of the same grade.
• Preference will be given to those schools that were not able to book in previous years
• In order to make outdoor environmental education opportunities available to as many HWDSB schools as possible, schools will be limited to the number of field trips.

What are the Class Sizes?

• Primary: Two classes, 25 students per class. Not to exceed a maximum of 50 students.
• Junior/Intermediate: Two classes. Not to exceed a maximum of 55 students.
• Senior: Two classes. Not to exceed a maximum of 55 students.

What is the Cost?

• The Board covers the cost of the program, which is $200 per class, per program

Who Arranges Transportation?

• Schools are required to book for and pay for their own transportation arrangements
• Book transportation to arrive at the site for 9:30 a.m. and depart at 2:00 p.m.

Program Locations

• HCA Staff will confirm location at time of booking
• Sites Include: Dundas Valley Conservation Area & the Christie Lake Outdoor Education Centre

Cancellation Policy

• A cancellation fee of $150 will apply if the school cancels the trip less than 20 office days prior to the scheduled field trip, and does not re-schedule within the next 4 weeks.

Extreme Weather

All programs continue rain, snow, or shine. Program participants are reminded to dress appropriately for the weather. During weather extremes a greater portion of our programs will be conducted indoors. In cases of extremely high, sustained, gale force winds or wind gusts 60km & over or if there are no suitable indoor program alternatives: e.g. stream study, field trips will be re-scheduled.

Booking Procedures

• Complete the following 2011-2012 Booking Request Form &fax or e-mail to Beth Stormont - see below
• Teachers will receive a Trip Confirmation Letter with all the details pertaining to the field trip once a trip date has been finalized.
• HCA staff will determine program site in relation to program selection and availability.
• HCA staff will provide program instruction and facilitation for all sessions.
