Dave Brown Outdoor Education Centre - Spring 2011 Booking Information

The Hamilton Industrial Environmental Association has continued funding for Environmental, Outdoor Education programming for core city schools at the Dave Brown Outdoor Education Centre located in the portable behind G. R. Allan, 900 King St. West, Hamilton. Primary teachers of Kindergarten, grades 1, 2 & 3 in the identified lower city area clusters are invited to submit their request to attend. Only a specific numbers of days have been allocated and booking will be on a first come, first serve basis. Kindergarten, grades 1, 2 & 3 teachers are invited to complete the following request form.

Dave Brown Outdoor Education CentrePlease be reminded that funding is being provided through the Hamilton Industrial Environmental Association for this outdoor education program. It is designated specifically for Primary Classes located in the lower city area, formerly city clusters, east and west. "Down To Earth" will deliver quality, curriculum-based outdoor education program at the Dave Brown Outdoor Education Centre site. Sandra Root and a teaching associate from "Down To Earth", (Fiona Van Wissen), will be organizing the schedule and communicating with teachers regarding their program request.

Program dates available will be in the months of April, May and June. Please contact Fiona Van Wissen directly to book your field trip date.

Spring 2011 Programs

Kindergarten

"A Walk In The Woods: Let’s Explore": Students will explore and investigate the local habitat. Students will hike; investigate the forest habitat and the differences between living and non-living things. Games and role-play will model life cycles in the world outdoors.

Grade One Program

"The World Outdoors, Plants & Animals: Basic Needs for Survival". Students will identify and interpret the survival needs of plants and animals in the local habitat. Activities include simulation activities, exploration, observation and group tasks in an authentic environment.

Grade Two Program

Animals, Animals, Everywhere! Students will examine, identify and interpret the signs of native animals and birds in the area. Students are involved in simulation activities, exploration, observation and hands-on learning.

Grade Three Program

Plant’astic! Students will explore the local environment investigating what grows there. Plant identification, measurement, comparison, soil, plant needs and native plant folklore are part of the hands-on program. Program will be adapted to suit season and outdoor plant community available for study.

Transportation

Transportation Information for booking at the Dave Brown Site located at G.R. Allan, 900 King St. W., Hamilton: (Transportation will not vary their times)

  • Schools will book and pay for their own transportation. We suggest you contact Laidlaw as your carrier.
  • Schools will schedule a pick-up and return for the a.m. and a pick-up and return for the p.m. – as schools have different dismissal times, this will vary
  • Allocate approximately 2- 2.5 hours for the morning program and 2 – 2.5 hours for the afternoon program

Teacher Responsibilities

Teacher Responsibilities
  • complete all trip forms, Category 1, Principal approval only, Parent Information and Permission form, bring all emergency information and health information as well as any required medications
  • arrange for volunteers to meet the 1:10 ratio required
  • remind students and supervisors to dress appropriately for outdoor activities and weather conditions
  • a minimum of 20 students should attend each half day program to a maximum of 26 students due to the costs of the program and program facility space – (include special education students with a regular class)
  • program instruction accommodates one class attending at a time
  • provide parents with information regarding “dress for the weather”, (boots, rainwear, etc., program is cancelled only in severe thunderstorms)
  • supervise students and assist with the activities, supervise washroom visit to G. R. Allan School facility
  • contact program supervisor Fiona Van Wissen if you have questions regarding weather conditions, emergency contact cell phone at Centre: 905-512-8155 – leave a message and it will be returned
  • site is not accessible to handicapped students who require specialized transportation, no wheelchair accessibility or availability
  • lunches are not necessary but, teachers may wish to bring a class snack, students should not be carrying “excess baggage”, backpacks etc.
  • include information to parents that states our source of sponsorship and encourage them to call or write to recognize our sponsor, Hamilton Industrial Environmental Association.
  • please ensure that students have signed school permission to be photographed for HIEA publications as photos may be used for HIEA newsletters and special features promoting their involvement in the community
  • teachers are asked to provide feedback on the program and “thank you to our supporter”, this is extremely important as HIEA pays the instructional costs of the program

  • lead and facilitate programming based on Ontario Curriculum, Science & Technology
  • provide equipment and student activities for program, including student handouts when suitable
  • provide knowledge & skills in Environmental, Outdoor Education programming
